The purpose for which the Mahayana Ministries is formed is to provide for the spiritual and psycho-social well-being of all people and to advocate for the poor and suffering every where.  We are working to fulfill this purpose through a variety of projects and programs.

What's in a name?  Most people have never heard the word Mahayana.  It is used to describe schools, philosophies and approaches to life, but it always points to an attitude of compassionate love and altruism for all beings. That's Mahayana Ministries.

The logo of the Mahayana Ministries is the name around a tree with long roots.  It is a reminder of the faith saying  “a tree with deep roots can withstand the worst storms, but it can not grow roots as the storm approaches.”  The Mahayana Ministries seeks to enable people to grow deep spiritual roots and find relief from pain and suffering before they are overcome by the storms of life.

FOUR REASONS TO CONTRIBUTE TO MAHAYANA MINISTRIES

1.  Mahayana programs are for all people.  Yes, we are a non-profit organization that focuses on helping people in need, but very often people appear to be doing fine when they're really not.  We don't wait for the obvious. We don't decide what constitutes being needy enough.  The world's wealthiest person may be spiritually destitute.

2. There are lots of excellent programs for the poor, indigent and various needs, and we either participate, contribute or have such programs, BUT we also seek out those who fall through the cracks in the system - e.g. those who make too much for assistance but not enough to care for their family... those who are working but don't have insurance or insurance won't cover or their coverage is so low they can't afford the difference ... those who are suffering and have nowhere to turn.

3. Mind, body and spirit is more than a cliché or a motto for the YMCA .... it is a reality.  Quality research has proven that we need to care for our mind, body and spirit to be healthy.  Why do you think good hospitals have physicians, counselors and chaplains?  All beings want peace and freedom from pain.  Don't you?  The Mahayana path is the compassionate path of care for the spiritual and psychosocial needs of all people. Even if you are the richest person in the world you experience upset and suffering.  Our goal is to touch your pain with love and compassion no matter who you are.

4.  Our vow is to do everything we  can to help all people be free from suffering and find peace in their lives.

Shared Ministry Huntingburg and Rockport, Indiana

This project was designed to enable Grace Lutheran Church and Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Rockport, IN. to have a pastor by sharing a pastor from Mahayana Ministries.  It is an active program started in 2004.  Both congregations are located in small towns in southern Indiana 30 miles apart.

Corporate Mental Health Program

This program is designed to enable employees of southwestern Indiana, southern Illinois and western Kentucky companies to receive mental health counseling services.

There are at least three reasons that this in an important program:

  1. Many companies can not afford to have mental health services as a part of their company insurance.
  2. Many employees can not afford to buy the company insurance even if it has mental health services.
  3. Some companies can not afford to offer health insurance.

The plan is quite simple. The company contributes a set amount per employee per month to Mahayana Ministries. The employee who wants to use the services pays a small co-payment. Even that is based upon their income.

To learn more about how this program can benefit your company e-mail Dr. Vance.

Aid Mission to the Gulf Coast

Even though the victims and problems of last year's hurricane season fall farther back in the newspaper, the need is still great. We were recently made aware of a call for financial assistance, physicians, counselors and therapists, people to help with clean-up, and much more.

We would like to send a mission to help. If you are interested in going, please contact Dr. Vance at 812-453-7979 or e-mail him.  If you would like to contribute to the cost of such a trip, donations can be sent to Mahayana Ministries, 8000 Lauderdale Dr., Evansville, IN. 47715.
